Couldn’t resist. Saw this on the Yahoo News feed today, regarding the Katherine floods:

Canadian Press - DARWIN, Australia (AP) - Helicopters plucked stranded residents from flooded homes and police standing in waist-deep water directed traffic Thursday as a river swollen by monsoon rains inundated one of northern Australia’s biggest towns.

Katherine? One of northern Australia’s biggest towns? Admittedly there’s not a LOT of towns in northern Oz, but…

I just downloaded IE7 Beta 2, and initial impressions are pretty good. Call me superficial, but the installer was pretty nice. Yeah, it just installs the program, but it looks nice! Hey, these are important things!

IE7 requires a reboot before using, which is acceptable - especially with the amount of integration that IE has with Windows.  The new interface looks pretty slick, but my continual beef with Microsoft is their ability to avoid the fact that not everyone lives in the USA!  When I install Windows, I say I live in Australia, and it then by default gives me US dictionaries, US time zone, etc.  Now I’ve set all that up, and IE7 gives me by default US English as the default.  C’mon, Microsoft!  Why do we set all those preferences if you never USE them??

Gripe over.

The zoom feature on IE7 is pretty cool, and the tab bar seems pretty usable.  A really cool feature is the Quick Tabs button - how handy!  My only request would be a setting to allow the current state of the browser to be remembered when it’s closed - similar to Firefox’s SessionSaver plugin.  Oh, a decent developer bar would be nice too, but then again, it’s IE.

I haven’t read all of this yet, but from the look of things, Tanya Anderson may have a valid case. Some examples of her allegations include the following:

When Ms. Andersen contacted Settlement Support Center, she was advised that her personal home computer had been secretly entered by the record companies’ agents, MediaSentry.

The record company plaintiffs employed MediaSentry as their agent to break into Ms. Andersen’s personal computer (and those of tens of thousands of other people) to secretly spy on and steal information or remove files. MediaSentry did not have Ms. Andersen’s permission to inspect, copy, or remove private computer files. If MediaSentry accessed her private computer, it did so illegally and secretly. In fact, Ms. Andersen was unaware that the trespass occurred until well after she was anonymously sued.

Could be an interesting battle…

I just read this BBC news report. Thought I’d make a note here about it, but to be honest, I’m left speechless by it. The nightmare that once was New Orleans is a message to us all, I think, that life is a fragile thing, and that there is no security in it apart from Christ.

Today saw the passing of an era. Robert Moog, the creator of the Moog Synthesizer, has died. As someone who grew up with a (vinyl!) LP of Moog Music (which of course included the obligatory “Popcorn”, the 4th overall best song for 1972) spinning on the turntable, I must simply say, “Robert Moog, we salute you!”

R.I.P.
